School of Biology and Pharmaceutical Engineering
School of Biology and Pharmaceutical Engineering includes Biology, Pharmacy and other relevant disciplines. Currently, there are 6 undergraduate programs, namely, Biological Engineering, Biotechnology, Biological Science, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Preparation and Biological Pharmacy. And it offers various postgraduate programs. Biology and Pharmacy were authorized to confer master’s degree as first-class disciplines in 2011. Meanwhile, other two master programs – Ferment Engineering and Chinese Materia Medica are under construction as approved projects. Microorganism and Biochemical Pharmaceutical Science is a provincial key discipline. At present, the school covers a number of teaching and scientific research platforms, namely, “Engineering and Technology Center for Peculiar Fruit and Vegetable in Mountain Areas of Hubei Province”, “Processing Engineering and Technology Research Center for Characteristic Agricultural By-Products of Wuhan City”, “Pharmaceutical Research and Development Center of Wuhan Polytechnic University”, “Asteras Drying Technologies Research Center”, “Research Institute of Nutritional Biology”, “Biological Technology Research Center for Bee Products” .
Now, the school has 1001 undergraduates, 72 graduates and 51 staff members, with 39 full-time teachers, among whom are 5 professors, 5 specially-appointed Professors with the title of “Chutian Scholar”and 11 associate professors, teachers with senior professional titles accounting for 41%. Also, there are 27 teachers with doctoral degree and 8 with master’s degree, 69% of the teachers holding doctoral degree. And the school runs 3 teaching & research offices concerning Bioengineering, Biological Science and Technology and Pharmaceutical Engineering respectively, one management center of experiment teaching (including laboratories of Biological Engineering and Technology, laboratories of Pharmaceutical Engineering) and two administrative offices (including General Office and Student Affairs Office).
Relying on the advantages of such disciplines as Grain and Oil, and Foodstuff etc. of the University, the school has attached great importance to the development and exploitation of natural materials and produce by means of modern biotechnology. At present, the school has shaped characteristic discipline clusters after years of construction and development and achieved remarkable accomplishments in teaching and scientific research, bringing into full play the advantages of teaching and scientific research of Biology which acts as a platform for other relative specialties in the University. Concerning teaching, the school focuses on developing students’ comprehensive quality and strengthens the efforts related to practical teaching, with an aim to enhance students’ practical creativity; in the meanwhile, persisting in cultivating applied innovative talents, following the guideline of “emphasizing quality, raising standard and creating characteristics”, the school tries to form the leading edges and characteristics of different majors and has shaped the distinct characteristics of the school.
In recent years, the school has been engaged in a wide range of research projects: 4 projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 National “Eleventh Five-Year” Supporting Plan Projects, 2 National Key Science and Technology Special Projects, 2 projects supported by National Agricultural Transformation Foundation, 8 projects supported by Natural Science Foundation of Hubei province and 25 Science and Technology projects of Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Department and Hubei Provincial Department of Education. Besides, it has undertaken altogether more than 80 production-study-research cooperation projects entrusted by enterprises, with the total research fund reaching 8 million yuan. And the school has won 4 Hubei provincial science and technology awards, gained 12 science and technology achievements appraisal and published more than 10 course books and treatises and 200 plus papers, among which 56 are included in SCI, EI. Generally speaking, the school has reached advanced level in discipline construction among similar disciplines and become an important base for talent cultivation and science research in fields of biology and pharmacy.
